Damien Boswell,
a 21-year-old Business Computing and Multimedia
student currently working for Lift Safe Ltd, has won the local and
regional finals of the Shell STEP scheme, winning awards and
cheques for £650. On October 10th he is one of ten students
competing in the London final of Shell STEP’s acclaimed annual
search for the UK’s Most Enterprising Student.
Damien’s
placement was with Oldham based LiftSafe Ltd, who
supply ergonomic lifting equipment and environmentally friendly
electric vehicles such as Golf Buggies, Pedestrian Tugs and
Multi-Passenger vehicles from their base in the Prince of Wales
Industrial Park in Oldham. In a 13 week placement Damien
developed a new website and marketing material, including several product
brochures, service database and working on images for the sign outside the
workplace.
General Manager of Lift Safe is Richard Steer, and he said “We have taken on university students in previous years, but Damien is our first STEP placement, and he has been head and shoulders above the other students. Lift Safe is going through a period of rapid growth - a 60% increase last year with strong demand for electric vehicles driven by environmental concerns, and for the lifting and handling equipment to meet the enhanced health and safety requirements. Our website marketing had been overtaken by this growth. Damien has brought us completely up to date; Damien has become so valuable that he will be working for LiftSafe on a part time basis.”
Damien was shortlisted
as one of ten Greater Manchester and Lancashire finalists in the area competition
held at BAE Systems in Preston, where he won and picked up a cheque for £250.
Then in the Northern Final held in the Manchester Midland Hotel he won another
cheque for £400, a crystal trophy and a place in the National Finals
to be held in London on October 10th.
This year Damian is one of the ten finalists from the six thousand students
around the UK that entered STEP 2007. In the twenty years that STEP has been
running, only one Oldham student and business has made it to the national
finals back in 2000. The UK winner receives £1000, with runner up cash
awards and an expenses paid overnight visit to the London event for all finalists.
Damien Boswell
said: “This is really exciting. There was lots of hard work put in over
the summer project, and for that to be acknowledged is great. I have had fantastic
support and encouragement from Lift Safe and University, so I am delighted
to have won through this far.”

Lift Safe Ltd has recently supplied another two electric mobile work positioners to Abbott Laboratories. These bespoke lifting solutions were built around lifting and handling issues at Abbott’s premises in the south east.
As you can see from the images below, the first mobile work positioner has
a telescopic mast, this allows the lifter to through a standard doorway yet
still achieve a massive 2.5M presentation height.
The stainless steel lifter pictured with and expando turn reel manipulating
attachment is perfect for turning reels from the vertical to the horizontal.
The legs fit under a pallet of packaging reels allowing the expando turn to
pick reels in the vertical then present reels to packing machines in the horizontal.
